Top 2012 prospects in Southwest

With the late signing period fast approaching (April 13 - May 18) and the high school state tournaments either in, or about to be in, full throttle in most states around the country, I thought it would be interesting to take a quick peek into the 2012 class as next year's recruiting battles begin to take shape.

Continuing with our sneak peak at the top talent in the 2012 class from the different regions of the country (we looked at the Southeast region earlier), let's take a look at the Southwest region which is dominated by the state of Texas. The Lone Star State boasts five of the top overall players in the 2012 class and is quickly becoming one of the hot beds for top talent. Elite programs continue to mine Texas for its talent (e.g. Rasheed Sulaimon to Duke), but the in-state schools don't let a player leave without a fight.

Isaiah Austin (Mansfield, Texas/Grace Preparatory Academy)
PF/C, 7-foot, 205 pounds

The No. 3-ranked player in the 2012 class has already pledged his allegiance to coach Scott Drew and Baylor. Although he needs to improve his strength and develop his body, Austin's unique combination of size and skill level should have Bears' fans excited about this young man's future.
