I headed to Wayne, N.J., on Friday for the Joe Brown Memorial Tournament, hosted by Playaz Basketball Club director Jimmy Salmon. The one-day event featured a small, but competitive field comprised of top programs from New York and New Jersey. Eight teams took place in both the U16 and U17 brackets with New Heights winning the senior championship over the New York Panthers in an all NYC final.

Standout player

Michael Young (Newark/St. Benedict's)
2013, PF, 6-8
It had been almost a year since I last saw Young and his game has improved by leaps and bounds since. Still a high-level athlete who can make plays above the rim on both ends, Young has developed a complementary skill set to match. He's a mismatch threat who can score over his left shoulder in the post, but surprised with the 3-point range on his jumper and ability to start the break with his dribble after pulling in a defensive rebound. Overall, he's got a versatile tool set and if he can continue to improve his game at a steady rate he'll be a priority big man in the Class of 2013.

Keep an eye on
