What coaches are looking for

Today is July 5th and that means college coaches from all across the country are saying goodbye to their families and heading to local airports, intent to reach their destination a night early so that when the live period officially starts on July 6 they can be in the gym right away. My biggest question heading into the summer of 2011 is who will be this year's version of Pat Connaughton. The Massachusetts native had only recently earned his first Division I scholarship offer at this time last year. He came into the period projecting as a low- to mid-major role player, more so because of his intangibles than anything else. By the time the summer was over he had his pick of high-major scholarship offers with Notre Dame ultimately beating out UCLA, Tennessee and a host of others. While the summer breakout stories aren't always as elaborate as Connaughton's, history has taught us that they are virtually inevitable. One month from now there will be a handful of players who have taken their recruitment to entirely new levels, while others will have fallen out.
