ND getting it done without star recruits

While there can be no denying recruiting is the bloodline of any successful college basketball program, a team's success doesn't always lie in perfect correlation to the ranking of past recruiting classes. Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish are a perfect example.

They are currently 24-5 overall and second in the Big East with a 13-4 mark in conference, despite having zero McDonald's All-Americans on their roster and only one active player who was ranked in the ESPNU 100 of his respective class.

Ben Hansbrough is one of the Big East's top guards, having started all 29 games and averaging 18.4 points, 4.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game and yet he wasn't ranked among the top 100 prospects by any major scouting service coming out of high school in 2006. He is now a fifth-year senior, having started his career at Mississippi State before transferring to Notre Dame following his sophomore season.
