Some thoughts and analysis from the college hoops world …
Accountability: The hand-wringing over the "self-imposed" penalties on USC has begun (how can we say "self-imposed" when USC worked closely with the NCAA and the Pac-10 in punishing itself … thank you, sir, may I have another?!).
Once again, the NCAA enforcement process misses the point. While there have been no facts publicly established that would approach proof, let us assume that former coach Tim Floyd knowingly provided O.J. Mayo's handler with $1,000 cash, as has been alleged. We seem to be worried about fairness to and the effects upon the current Trojan players. The system is never fair or proportional to the current players in any scenario. Consider that USC still has the same assistant coaches that worked for Floyd. If the program was so dirty that we needed this public self-immolation, how could the NCAA possibly allow those sitting next to Floyd to remain employed? And how is it that the accountability stops with Floyd?
