Briante Weber (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) is the latest commitment for the VCU Rams. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound point guard is an electrifying, versatile prospect that flew under the radar a little bit, but caught the eye of second-year coach Shaka Smart and his staff at VCU's camp last week. "I chose VCU because of their style of play, along with the fact my mom could come see me play all the time," said Weber. "That was important to me." He is at his best in transition or when he can put intense defensive pressure on the ball. Offensively, when the pace of the game gets faster, he gets better. Weber, who is comfortable at both guard spots, can run the team, find open teammates, beat defenders off the bounce and knock down open mid-range jumpers. However, he still needs to improve his long-range jumper, especially from behind the arc. On defense, his excellent lateral quickness and fast hands allow him to be a tenacious on-ball defender. Away from the ball, he anticipates passing lanes well, knowing when and how to go for steals. Plus, he can guard multiple defenders on the perimeter, which increases his value.
