Here's a story you rarely hear. Zach Auguste (Marlborough, Mass./New Hampton) committed to Notre Dame on Friday. The fact is, he's a good player and Notre Dame needed him to round out its class. Apparently, Mike Brey needed him badly because the Irish coach didn't give up even after not making the cut for Auguste in August.
Notre Dame made Auguste's list of eight but missed the cut when he trimmed his final list to West Virginia, Florida, Marquette and Georgia Tech. When Auguste informed the Irish that he wasn't coming to South Bend, the news fell on deaf ears.
"When I told them they weren't on the final four they didn't know what to say," Auguste said. "They said they couldn't let me give up on Notre Dame."
So, Brey stuck to his guns. He didn't give up on Auguste; he refused to accept that Notre Dame was cut. "I told them no but he called me the next day and was like 'Zach, you gotta come here.' He was passionate about Notre Dame and me and that meant a lot to me."
