Detroit Tigers: If you think that all the world's problems are insurmountable and that things don't ever get better, read this piece from Susan Whitall of the Detroit News. When former Tiger slugger and current minor league coach Willie Horton first went to spring training with the Tigers in 1962, he entered a world of ignorance and intolerance. While the problems he encountered may still exist in some forms, their institutionalized components have been eradicated. What he experienced -- and in some ways helped change himself -- is a testament to the fact that a negative status quo does not have to be forever.

Kansas City Royals: Ever wonder what ballplayers do with those way-above-average salaries they get? Wright Thompson tells you in today's Kansas City Star: they buy Hummers. Four current Royals -- including Mike Sweeney and Rookie of the Year Angel Berroa -- have them and they are apparently the rage among big leaguers and athletes from all sports. The Hum-Vee is one of the most laughably excessive vehicles since the 1959 Cadillac, a triumph of battlefield practicality over roadway aesthetics. It has, though, gotten a reputation for being stylish far beyond what its utilitarian boxiness should allow and that appeals to this particularly small demographic: young men with millions of dollars to throw around.
