Detroit Tigers: If you think that all the world's
problems are insurmountable and that things don't ever
get better, read this piece from Susan Whitall of the
Detroit News. When former Tiger slugger and current
minor league coach Willie Horton first went to spring
training with the Tigers in 1962, he entered a world
of ignorance and intolerance. While the problems he
encountered may still exist in some forms, their
institutionalized components have been eradicated.
What he experienced -- and in some ways helped change
himself -- is a testament to the fact that a negative
status quo does not have to be forever.
