Buffalo Bills: On Tuesday the team terminated the contract of backup QB Alex Van Pelt because of a serious wrist injury that required major surgery last month. The Buffalo News reports the 33-year-old Van Pelt was not able to pass a physical and was not certain to be ready to throw at training camp this summer. Van Pelt, however, will not be cutting ties with the Bills. He has accepted a job as the color commentator for Bills games alongside radio play-by-play man John Murphy. The move could step up the club's pursuit of unrestricted free agent QB Billy Volek, who spent the last four years with the Tennessee Titans. "We have interest," said president and GM Tom Donahoe. "We wanted to get him in here for a visit to make sure he has interest in us, which it appears that he does. We're going to put something together to present to his agent and see where it goes."
Detroit Lions: WR Charles Rogers' recovery from the season-ending injury he suffered Oct. 7 is on schedule for him to be ready by the time the team starts training camp in late July. Since March 1, Rogers has been working out four days a week at the Lions' headquarters. He has experienced some soreness from exercising the muscles and other tissue in the shoulder. "As each day approaches, the mini-camps or I approach the season, I'm smiling, just licking my chops -- getting ready to get back out there and perform," Rogers told the Detroit News. "Those guys drafted me No. 2 overall to come out here, be healthy, perform, make plays. That's what I'm here for." Jason Arapoff, the Lions' strength and conditioning coach, supervises Rogers' weight training in consultation with head trainer Al Bellamy and says there haven't been any setbacks.
