Martinez would make sense for Yanks

George Steinbrenner would sign Pedro Martinez -- a free agent after this year -- just to spite the Red Sox brass.

  • Does anybody like the corporate naming rights nonsense that plagues modern baseball? Outside of the executives on both sides who make the deals, no. Here's an idea: no company can put its name on a stadium unless it pays for at least half of the construction costs. ESPN.com's Jim Caple invited his readers to rename the stadiums that currently sport corporate monikers. These are the results.

  • Bernie Williams is probably feeling a little marginalized these days with the signing of Kenny Lofton to a two-year contract by the Yankees. Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests that it should be Williams and not Lofton who leads off for the potent Yankee offense.

  • In spite of all the tribulations in last year's American League Championship Series, is it really such a stretch to picture Pedro Martinez in a Yankee uniform? Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald suggests that George Steinbrenner would sign Martinez -- a free agent after this year -- just to spite the Red Sox brass.
