Teams forced to change mentality

Many teams are still convinced that a high-profile, franchise quarterback is the surest means to success.

Of the five quarterbacks who have started in the last three Super Bowls, none was picked on the first day of the draft. Rich Gannon was taken the earliest, in the fourth round, and he was supposed to be switched to free safety. Tom Brady was a sixth-round selection, Brad Johnson was chosen in the ninth round and neither Kurt Warner nor Jake Delhomme was even drafted.

But while some teams have decided to look for diamonds in the rough, others are still convinced that a high-profile, franchise quarterback is the surest means to success.

The Indianapolis Colts haven't been able to come to an agreement on a long-term contract with NFL co-MVP Peyton Manning and will use the franchise tag on him.
