Detroit Tigers: Pedro Astacio -- recovering from shoulder surgery -- recently had an open workout for major league clubs in the Dominican Republic and the Tigers liked what they saw. While conceding that he is not yet at 100 percent, Astacio, 34, will be healthy enough to pitch at least a portion of the 2004 season. He tore his labrum after coming to the Mets and has not yet healed all the way. "We're interested," general manager Dave Dombrowski told Tom Gage of the Detroit News. "Starting pitching is an area we're still focusing on."

New York Yankees: The Yankees do not appear to be satisfied with having just Tony Clark as insurance for Jason Giambi's dicey knee. George King of the New York Post reports they are also in conversation with Travis Lee, late of the Devil Rays. Meanwhile, the surgery on Aaron Boone's torn ACL was put off yesterday, owing to a rash in the area. "I was on the table and ready to go and they said it would be better to wait," Boone said.
