Rodriguez drawing plenty of attention

The Tigers believe the signing of Ivan Rodriguez will boost ticket sales and bring excitement to the franchise.

  • It's been open season on the White Sox in Chicago this season as they've lost some name players and are looking at a future that will not include star rightfielder Magglio Ordonez at some point. Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune is not going to join in the hue and cry. He refuses to jump on the bandwagon whose riders are all chiding the franchise for playing things on the cheap.

  • Few men at the municipal level have ever wielded the kind of power Robert Moses did in New York in the middle part of the last century. As Bill Conlin points out in the Philadelphia Daily News, had Moses not told Walter O'Malley he was not getting a new ballpark in Brooklyn, there would be no Los Angeles Dodgers to discuss. But he said "stick it" and O'Malley did: almost 3,000 miles away. Now, two ownership groups later, the Dodgers are struggling. Conlin wonders if new majority owner Frank McCourt has what it takes to keep this storied franchise up to its past standards.

  • Now that the Patriots have copped two titles in the last three years, the Red Sox are bound to be feeling some relative deprivation. Dave Anderson of the New York Times has some fun with this when he imagines what a conversation between Foxboro Stadium and Fenway Park would be like.
