Amidst the anticipation of the New York Rangers unnecessarily adding yet another high-priced, declining forward older than 30, the two other teams in the New York City area have some interesting plotlines of their own this weekend.
On Friday night the Islanders (22-20-4-1) travel to Carolina to face former head coach Peter Laviolette for the first time since he was fired after last season. Laviolette, who took over the Hurricanes from the fired Paul Maurice in December, was dumped after something akin to a players' coup despite leading the Isles to their only two playoff berths in the past nine seasons.
