Boston Red Sox: Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe profiles Tim Wakefield, who has been with the Sox since 1995. Looking back, he believes that 2003 was the most fun he has ever had playing professional baseball -- this in spite of surrendering the pennant-clinching home run to Aaron Boone of the Yankees in Game Seven of the ALCS.

Kansas City Royals: I was surprised to find there was a "race" to sign the highly problematic Juan Gonzalez, but the headline in today's Kansas City Star says the Royals are the frontrunners in it. His agent, Alan Nero, says there are two other teams in the bidding and also adds his client his 100 percent healthy. Gonzalez is 34 and has played more than 115 games only once in the last four seasons. He has missed more than half his team's games over the past two seasons. Because of that, any deal with the Royals is probably going to contain incentives pertaining to games played, writes Dick Kaegel. The pursuit of Gonzalez has put their other rightfield possibility -- Raul Mondesi -- into the shadows for now.
