People like to talk and write about the never-ending struggles of baseball and how the sport is forever shooting itself in the foot with ill-advised decisions. One thing is utterly undeniable, however: no other sport in the world manages to keep itself in the news the way baseball does. Through a series of well-timed deadlines, meetings and award announcements, baseball has managed to keep itself relevant long after the last out of the World Series was recorded.

The only downside of this is that -- for those who agree with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Art Thiel's assessment of the Red Sox and Yankees as the "New York-Boston axis of evil" -- a big percentage of the news is coming from those two franchises. There is thunder remaining to be stolen by other teams, to be sure. Vladimir Guerrero could still land outside the New York-Boston corridor. Miguel Tejada, Rafael Palmeiro, Ivan Rodriguez and Greg Maddux all certainly will. Apart from Bartolo Colon signing with the Angels, at this juncture, the biggest stories continue to be generated by the biggest rivalry in the sport.
