Ortiz's impact on Boston overstated
David Ortiz simply did not deserve to finish as high as fifth in the American League MVP voting.

Tomorrow we'll discuss the National League MVP voting
much as I did yesterday with that of the American
League. That was a fun column to write and it
generated a lot of great mail. Most of you were in
agreement with most of what I said. The main point of
contention came on my opinion that David Ortiz did not
deserve to finish as high as fifth. The arguments used
in his favor were that he performed well in the clutch
and played well down the stretch.
First of all, what is your definition of "Clutch?" If it's any of the following, then Mr. Ortiz was not even the best clutch hitter on his team:
Slugging average with runners on: .512 (fourth on
team)
With runners in scoring position: .482 (fifth on team)
Scoring position, two out: .571 (third on team)
Bases loaded: .600 (third on team)
