Veteran Thomas should help Wings
Steve Thomas will bring some much-needed energy and skill to the struggling Red Wings.
Veteran winger Steve "Stumpy" Thomas could have helped a lot of teams this season but the Red Wings were the first to buck up by signing him to a one-year, $1 million deal on Wednesday. Detroit general manager Ken Holland sought Thomas after forward Henrik Zetterberg broke his leg Monday night against Vancouver, forcing him out of action for up to six weeks.
"We don't have a lot of depth up front with Henrik's loss, and given the competition in the conference, every point is important," Holland told the Detroit Free Press. "Steve Thomas is experienced; he is competitive. He's physically strong. He can play that patient game. It's a league of patience now, and we've been an impatient team."
