Jacksonville Jaguars: The surgery to repair the bursa sac on QB Mark Brunell's elbow will keep him out "three-to-six weeks" according to his agent Leigh Steinberg. Steinberg also downplayed recent rumors that Brunell would like to play for the Dolphins next season, of one of the three teams from California -- Oakland, San Francisco or San Diego. "We've never even discussed it," Steinberg told the Florida Times-Union. "I don't know where that came from. Next season is the furthest thing from Mark's mind. That's a long ways away. I haven't had a single conversation with him about next season." ... The team, which lost Pro Bowl P Chris Hanson for the season to a foot injury last week, held tryouts for Ps Nick Harris and Steve Cheek and K Travis Dorsch. Dorsch could possibly unseat K Seth Marler, who has only connected on nine of his 14 attempts this season.

Detroit Lions: DE Luther Elliss is eligible to come off the team's non-football injury list, but the Lions aren't so anxious to bring him back to the den. Monday was the first day Elliss and other players in his category were allowed to practice but coach Steve Mariucci told Elliss in a pre-practice meeting that he won't be actived this week because players might be signed at other positions -- such as punter. Elliss hasn't made any demands to Mariucci about his status, but the fact that there are no immediate plans for Elliss to practice with the team has him questioning whether he fits in the team's plans this year. "I thought for sure I could practice, at least show them that I'm ready, more than ready," Elliss told the Detroit News. "If it comes to a point where I'm not fitting in anymore, I'd rather mosey on -- go somewhere else."

Green Bay Packers: DE Joe Johnson, who is a poster posy for the dangers of spending big money on free agents, continues to have his stay in Green Bay marked with misfortune. He has a serious right thigh injury that could shelve him for the rest of season. Johnson underwent an MRI Monday and the results aren't available, but coach Mike Sherman, as well as another team official, acknowledged that the injury could be severe enough that Johnson's second season as a Packer could also end on injured reserve. "He has a severe strain," Sherman told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He struggled walking off the field. So that's in the back of my mind. The MRI (magnetic resonance imaging test) will tell everything." Last season, he played in five games before tearing his left triceps.
