Toronto Maple Leafs: If Toronto's Bryan McCabe had surgery after first injuring his knee in the offseason, he might have been ready for Saturday's season opener. Instead, the Leafs defenseman reinjured the knee and needed surgery Friday, causing him to miss about six weeks.
Carolina Hurricanes: Carolina and rookie Eric Staal deviated from the standard model for entry-level contracts to get the 18-year-old signed Monday. But the second-overall pick in the 2003 draft could still make $3 million in bonuses if he keeps playing as well as he had in the preseason.
