American League
Cleveland Indians: If you saw Cliff Lee's effort against the Red Sox and Pedro Martinez on Sunday, you saw a pretty good trip to the hill. That outing and a couple of others have the rookie thinking about a spot in the rotation for 2004. Manager Eric Wedge is impressed but guarantees nothing, reports Sheldon Ocker of the Akron Beacon Journal. Lee understands this fully. "A guy like me -- I'm a rookie -- nobody is going to guarantee me anything. I have to come back and prove that I can pitch."

Detroit Tigers: Defeat be damned! Mike Maroth has every intention of taking the ball for his final two starts of the year. He is set to start against the Royals tonight and to pitch the season finale on Sunday at home against the Twins. "My goal right now is to finish strong, and it would be a great feeling to do that," he told Tom Gage of the Detroit News. "Every time I take that mound, I learn something."
