Teams must control the clock to win
Sometimes all you have to do to win a game is keep the ball. If the opponent doesn't have the ball, he can't score.
Sometimes all you have to do to win a ball game is keep the ball. If you have the ball and the opponent doesn't, he can't score. There's nothing more basic about football strategy than that. On Sunday, there were five games where the winner had a rushing yards per play average below normal, yet never went away from the run. They were patient. They didn't turn the ball over (or if they did, they got it right back.) And they kept their opponent off the field. If possession is nine-tenths of the law, it is probably the same percentage of winning a football game as well.
