Cuts are beginning around the NHL as competition for jobs starts to get more fierce. Here are some morsels of news for a taste of what's happening at selected training camps:

Atlanta Thrashers -- Atlanta's goaltending battle between Byron Dafoe and Pasi Nurminen begins in earnest Thursday night.

That's when Nurminen gets the start in the Thrashers' exhibition opener at home against the Lightning. Dafoe will start Friday at Tampa Bay. There's nothing mysterious to how head coach Bob Hartley will decide between the two.
