Here's a name one usually doesn't see in a baseball
column: Cher. There are many good reasons for that, of
course, chief among them that her constituency and
baseball's are nearly mutually exclusive. But Cher's
movie career has a bearing on the 2003 American League
In 1985, Cher starred in a movie called
"Mask" and her performance was hailed as brilliant.
She was not even nominated for an Academy Award that
year. Two years later, she made a slight comedy called
"Moonstruck," in which she often forgot to do the New
York accent she was affecting and was given the Oscar
for Best Actress. Many said at the time that she was
really being retroawarded for the overlooked "Mask"
