No one can accuse the Tennessee Titans of practicing ageism. The team
signed 44-year-old place-kicker Gary Anderson Wednesday to replace the
injured Joe Nedney. Anderson won a kicking competition against former
Redskin Brett Conway and former Bengal Neil Rackers, who were both released
right before the start of the regular season.
Both kickers have stronger legs than Anderson, but Conway has a history of
quadriceps injuries and Rackers has a career field percentage of 65.6. In
Anderson, the Titans get a kicker who lacks leg strength but is almost
automatic from 39 yards in. During his 21-year career, he's converted 90 percent of his field-goal attempts inside 40 yards.
