American League
Minnesota Twins: It's the gas and knife for Joe Mays. La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Twins moundsman will undergo Tommy John surgery today and will probably not pitch again until 2005. Mays, 27, has been experiencing discomfort in his elbow and elected to have the once-revolutionary surgery that more and more pitchers are opting for.

New York Yankees: Jose Contreras, his inaugural season in the Free World impacted by injuries, reports that he will be ready to pitch in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. By then the wrap should be off his ankle, the recipient of a mild strain. Sam Borden of the New York Daily News has the story.
