Defense back in vogue in C-USA

The Labor Day holiday completed one of the more promising opening weekends in C-USA history, despite a couple of notable stumbles. UAB won on the road at Baylor. Louisville handled Kentucky on the road. Houston opened with a rout of Rice and defending co-champs TCU and Cincinnati had big wins.

And after a couple of years of defenses dominating the league, the big offense might be coming back into vogue. Four C-USA teams scored 40 points or more over the weekend. The Big 12 was the only other conference in the country with at least four teams scoring 40.

Army
The Black Knights were the only C-USA not to play last weekend, but they'll begin their final season in C-USA on Saturday when they face Connecticut. After watching what Connecticut did in last weekend's impressive win over Indiana, the opener against the fledgling Division I-A program figures to be a fight for the Black Knights, who have lost six straight openers after winning seven straight through 1996.
