Ending a summer-long soap opera of negotiations that looked as if the United Nations couldn't even broker, the Chicago Blackhawks finally signed 2001 first-round draft pick Tuomo Ruutu on Thursday. The Blackhawks might have everyone believe Ruutu is one of the last pieces needed to get Chicago back in the playoffs, when in reality he's more likely to be the difference between finishing 12th instead of 15th in the Western Conference. For long-suffering Blackhawks fans, it's the same old story as the team has again come up short in attempting to build the team into a contender because of miserly owner Bill Wirtz's penny-pinching.
