North Carolina, 0-2 in openers under John Bunting, will face an improved Florida State defense in Chapel Hill. Impact freshmen have the natives buzzing in Charlottesville and Raleigh. And although Maryland isn't taking Northern Illinois lightly, it's unlikely that former ACC Offensive Player of the Year Bruce Perry will play this week.

Clemson
  • Coach Tommy Bowden says not to expect much playing time from receiver Roscoe Crosby, which means not only will Crosby play, but he might start. Bowden is notorious for poor-mouthing the availability of players who are either injured or, in Crosby's case, rusty. Crosby is the Kansas City Royals farmhand who has been cleared to play football this season despite missing considerable school time the past year.

  • Yusef Kelly ate his way out of the starting tailback job, reporting to camp overweight, but the pounds are "melting off," as Bowden says, so look for Kelly to get an early look even if sophomore Duane Coleman does start, as Bowden has intimated.
