A surprising new face at QB for BC. The Hurricanes discover they have the Chosen One while Pitt waits to hear if Larry Fitzgerald will be full strength by the season opener. And Temple is happy to finally have a place to call home highlight the Big East team notes.
Boston College
Junior quarterback Quinton Porter will start BC's season opener on Saturday
against Wake Forest, winning a close competition against junior college
transfer Paul Peterson. Peterson seemed to have the advantage in the quarterback
derby after completing 20-of-26 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns in an
intrasquad scrimmage a week ago. But BC coach Tom O'Brien picked Porter
primarily because of the experience he gained during two seasons as Brian St.
Pierre's backup. "He had a huge advantage being here for two years," O'Brien said.
"One of the biggest disadvantages Peterson had was his grasp of the
offense...Right now I think (Porter) gives us the best chance to win the football game."
Porter had been bothered by injuries since spring practice when he broke his
left collarbone. He arrived at fall camp with a sore knee and missed the first
scrimmage. But Porter pulled ahead after completing 13-of-19 passes for 212
yards in a touchdown in BC's final scrimmage last Wednesday. Despite serving as
a backup for two seasons, Porter doesn't have much experience. The 6-foot-5,
221-pound Maine native has thrown 15 passes in 11 career appearances. O'Brien said
Peterson would play in the second quarter against Wake Forest.
