Broncos still confident in Shanahan

Short of Bill Parcells, Mike Shanahan is widely regarded as the best coach
in the NFL. No one is considered more focused or organized than Shanahan,
and his resume does include back-to-back Super Bowl titles. But Shanahan's
image as an ubercoach has been tarnished somewhat by a four-year stretch
that has seen the Broncos go from feared to forgotten as Super Bowl
contenders.
Worse yet, the Broncos have been to the playoffs only once during that span,
and they were summarily dismissed by the eventual Super Bowl champion
Baltimore Ravens. So why would club owner Pat Bowlen open his checkbook to
make Shanahan the highest-paid coach in the league when his recent body of
work has been less than impressive?
"Mike's one of the top, if not the top coach in the National Football
League," Bowlen told the Denver Post. "And I think we'll make the playoffs
lots of times and hopefully win two more Super Bowls."
