If you're more than a marginal baseball fan, you've heard of Tommy John surgery. It's been nearly 30 years since John became the first pitcher to have the elbow-reconstruction operation that would bear his name. Now for a baseball trivia quiz: Who was the second guy to pitch again after having Tommy John surgery? Well, that would be me.
Since then, hundreds have had the operation that was pioneered by Dr. Frank Jobe. Current major-league stars who have recovered from Tommy John surgery include John Smoltz, Kerry Wood, Mariano Rivera and John Franco.
