Chicago Bears: Despite a strong performance from backup RB Adrian Peterson Saturday night,
RB Anthony Thomas is still listed No. 1 on the depth chart. "What I told
Train [before Saturday's game] was that we know him," coach Jauron told the
Chicago Tribune. "I think Anthony is a terrific back. He had the back spasms
[which limited him during the first week of practice]. When he did, we said
let's take a long look at Adrian in the first game. We think we have
something in Adrian, but we don't know him like we know Anthony. So let's
give him a chance and we'd like to see him against the [first-string
defense]. So we'll have a true read of what he is."
New York Giants: As if the continuing problems with WR Ron Dixon weren't enough, coach Jim
Fassel had more problems in Giants camp Sunday. S Ryan Clark blew his top
and threw a punch at G Sean O'Connor. Fassel, who has been stressing the
importance of his players maintaining their composure, read Clark the riot
act then walked off a 15-yard penalty on the defense. "I said it 100 times
since we've been in camp," Fassel told the New York Post. "That is not what
I want. It was the very first meeting I had with 'em in the spring. I said
the No. 1 thing, I don't want to see anyone lose composure, take a swing at
somebody. It's happened to us. I told the defense afterwards that will cost
us a game this year if it happens and you won't play as long as you do that.
You have to prove to me now you won't do that in a game." Prior to the
incident Clark had a shot at making the team, now he might be on the outside
looking in.
New York Jets: RB Curtis Martin has been missing in action over the team's first two
preseason games. Martin sat out last week's game in Tokyo and on Saturday
he was on the field for three plays -- all passes. When asked about his
three-play stint, coach Herman Edwards told the New York Post, "Was it that
many? They were all passes, weren't they? He'll be in there next week
[against the Saints Saturday night]. We have three games left. We know where
he's at. We know what Curtis needs to get ready. Next week we'll turn him
loose." The Jets maintain that Martin, who went through last season with two
badly sprained ankles, is not hurt.
