Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Coach Jon Gruden is going to be cautious with his players this early in the
preseason, and he said that CB Ronde Barber (sore right knee), WR Keenan
McCardell (hamstring), LB Justin Smith (hamstring) and TE Todd Yoder
(dehydration) are all questionable for Saturday's American Bowl in Tokyo.
"We'll see where we are when we get off the plane,'' Gruden told the Tampa
Tribune. "I think you have to think wisely about what you're doing in late
July in the big picture.'' QB Brad Johnson, who did not throw Sunday or
Monday because of a "weary'' arm, is expected to start the game against the
Jets.
Jacksonville Jaguars: When WR Jimmy Smith saw teammate DT Larry Smith collapse twice from the
heat, it only solidified the importance of proper hydration. Smith has been
drowning himself in water this offseason, but not just to keep fluids in his
body, but to keep pounds off of it. He went from 220 pounds to 207 pounds
this spring by drinking 110 ounces of water each day. "A lot of guys I know
have had success with it," Smith told the Orlando Sentinel. "It's a simple
formula, gallons of water. Half your body weight in ounces of water." DT
Marcus Stroud also has lost 15-20 pounds on the water diet&The proliferation
of high-end indoor training facilities has yet to reach Jacksonville. The
Jags do not have an indoor practice facility so when thunder and lightning
accompanied an afternoon rainstorm Monday, the the team was forced to move
into a conference room at nearby Alltel Stadium.
New York Jets: QB Tory Woodbury was waived Monday. According to the New York Post,
Woodbury asked to be released after he was told that he was being moved
full-time to quarterback instead of splitting time at receiver. "He just
wasn't into playing football at this point," Edwards said. "I just wanted to
make sure he wasn't making the decision out of frustration. He would have
had an opportunity to play quarterback in the preseason."
