Millen must avoid holdout with Rogers

The Detroit Lions are said to be close to bridging the economic gap that stands between them and the signing of top pick Charles Rogers. That's good news for general manager Matt Millen, who is on thin ice in his third year in the Motor City and needs to have a productive season to keep his job.

Rogers is going to be asked to provide the Lions with his big-play ability, but he can't afford to miss any camp time if the team expects him to make an immediate impact. Rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans are slated to report to camp at 3 p.m. today, and even if Rogers avoids missing any time, he'll already be behind the eight ball.

Very few receivers, no matter how talented, can make their mark during their rookie season. The transition from college to the pros tends to be rougher for wideouts than any other position except quarterback. For every Randy Moss there are ten Eric Moulds.
