Boston Red Sox: College football teams are often accused of "looking ahead" whenever they lose to a lesser team prior to facing a powerful opponent the following week. Can this phenomenon (if it does, in fact, even exist) be possible in baseball? For the second time in the past month, the Red Sox play the last-place Devil Rays just prior to taking on the first-place Yankees. Michael Silverman talks to various Red Sox players who dismiss the notion out of hand.

Oakland Athletics: While in New York with his team, Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi joked about trading pitcher Kelvim Escobar to the Red Sox (who are apparently quite interested in him) as a way of poking fun at Yankee owner George Steinbrenner. Meanwhile, on the other coast, Ricciardi's old boss, A's GM Billy Beane, is denying a rumor that the A's were about to trade Ted Lilly and Class A prospect Joe Blanton for Escobar. "We're working on a lot of things," Beane told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
