The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were always better for having Paul Kariya. Now they
have Kariya to thank for allowing the team to improve this offseason by signing
center Sergei Fedorov.
Of course, it took Kariya's departure to Colorado to make it happen.
The Mighty Ducks were able to sign Fedorov to a five-year, $40 million contract
because a looming labor dispute next summer eliminated 28 other bidders and
because Anaheim allowed Kariya to become an unrestricted free agent by refusing
to give him a qualifying offer of $10 million for one year.
