New York Giants: Officials from the team will meet today with officials of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority in hopes of advancing an agreement on modernizing Giants Stadium to make it eligible to be the site of the 2008 Super Bowl. The Giants would finance the project, at a cost of $250 million to $275 million, but want the sports authority to hand over full management control of the stadium. The 27-year-old stadium originally cost $78 million to build. George Zoffinger, chairman of the sports authority, said he favored the Giants' controlling the stadium -- at a price. "My dilemma is,
this is the jewel of New Jersey, it's what got us started at the
Meadowlands, and we deserve to get paid fairly," he told the New York Times.
He did not cite a figure, but he said the stadium was expected to have a cash
flow of $25 million this year before paying for maintenance and capital
improvements. Zoffinger said he was confident a deal could be reached by
September.
Jacksonville Jaguars: The club signed veteran S Johndale Carty, a former fourth-round pick by Atlanta, according to the Florida Times-Union. The 6-foot, 196-pound Carty made three starts since being drafted in 1999, but he played in all 16 games each of the past two years. Carty's signing, which came a week after the Jaguars released DBs James Boyd and Steve Smith, increased their roster to 88 players.
New York Jets: When the team takes the field today as a complete squad for the first time since its playoff loss to the Raiders in January, LB Mo Lewis will be watching from the sidelines. The 12-year veteran is recovering from arthroscopic hip surgery, although the Jets expect him to be ready for
training camp (July 21). "He'll be ready for camp, no question," GM Terry
Bradway told the New York Daily News. "As far as now, it's not really
necessary for him to be out there. It's more important to see guys like
Jason Glenn and (rookie) Victor Hobson gets the practice reps."
