American League Detroit Tigers: Yesterday we linked you to an article
by John Lowe comparing the Tigers to the 1899
Cleveland Spiders. I took the opportunity to also
discuss the alarming number of times the Tigers had
been shutout. This led to the question, "how many
times were the Spiders shut out?" In spite of losing
134 games, only 14 of them came via blanking. Lowe's
topic today is Mike Maroth who is starting tonight in
hopes of breaking his 0-9 run to begin the season.
Lowe reveals that Maroth also had an 0-9 start in the
minors three years ago.
New York Yankees: If you watched the Yankees-Red Sox
series you saw in Bernie Williams a player who did

plate, he dropped a fly ball in the ninth inning of
Roger Clemens' 299th victory that, fortunately for the
march to history, proved to be inconsequential. As it
turns out, Williams has not been himself for good
reason. An MRI revealed a torn meniscus and has sent
him the disabled list. Four to six weeks of shelf time
might be in order, writes Andrew Marchand of the New
York Post.
