Chicago Bears: After selecting Florida S Todd Johnson in the fourth round of the draft on
Sunday, the club felt comfortable enough with their secondary situation to
release S Damon Moore. "I'm frustrated I didn't get a chance to do things
I wanted to do [with the Bears]," Moore told the Chicago Tribune. "But they
made a decision, and I have no beef with that. It's a business." The Bears
took a chance on the promising Moore, who was coming off reconstructive knee
surgery, but he only played in six games last year.
Atlanta Falcons: In a recent survey, players ranked the Georgia Dome's current field 28th out
of the league's 32 playing surfaces. That could change next year, as Dome
officials decided Tuesday to replace their 11-year-old AstroTurf surface
with FieldTurf, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The
artificial surface is closer to grass in feel and is softer than typical
turf, in part because it contains ground-up sneakers. The state-owned Dome
will install FieldTurf in June at a cost of about $1.3 million.
New York Giants: Even though the team used its first two draft picks on defensive linemen,
that didn't stop them from acquiring two more street free agents to compete
in camp. The New York Post reports the Jints signed Cliff Washburn, a 6-5,
275-pound defensive end from The Citadel, and David Thompson, a 6-4,
290-pound defensive tackle from Ohio State. Washburn is a very intriguing
prospect. He has only one year of college football experience but started
four years for The Citadel's basketball team. In his one season on the
football field, he tied a school record with 12 sacks.
