Texans thinking ahead when they drafted QBs

Before he retired two seasons ago, Ron Wolf was regarded as one of the
shrewdest general managers in the league. One of the tings he was famous
for was drafting talented quarterbacks in the middle rounds and then using
them as trade bait in upcoming drafts.
Even though he had Brett Favre on the roster, he drafted Mark Brunell in the
fifth round. He eventually traded him to Jacksonville for third- and fifth-round picks. Wolf drafted Matt Hasselbeck in the sixth round in 1998 and used him to move up high in the first round in 2001. Wolf was at it again in 1999 when he took Aaron Brooks in the fourth round. He then traded him to New Orleans two seasons later for a third-round pick.
Although all of those trades didn't work out for Green Bay, the trades
showed what valuable commodities quarterbacks are, and how teams would be
willing to trade picks in order to get one who seemed to be developing well.
