Everybody who knew him figured Red Sox boss Theo Epstein would be a GM one day. But who figured that day would come so soon?

Midwinter, 1 a.m. Theo Epstein was walking home from his new office in Fenway Park when his cell phone rang. What now, he thought at the end of another 16-hour day in another 80-hour week. What could possibly be the matter?
"Hey, dude," said the voice of an old Yale buddy. "You were just on Jay Leno."
"No, I wasn't," said Theo. "I'm outside Fenway. Besides, I already turned them down."
