Why are NBA home teams "cooking" in the early going?

Take a quick look at the 2002-03 NBA expanded standings, and perhaps the most interesting thing you'll notice -- apart from the LA Lakers' subpar start -- is the number of teams with dominant home-court records. With each NBA team having played at least nine home games to date, a total of seven clubs have either zero or one loss on their home floor. The league-wide record of home teams is far better than in any recent season, and remarkably better than last year's figure:
