Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis prefers to stay within the Raider family when hiring a head coach, which made his 1998 decision to bring in Jon Gruden all the more extraordinary. Four years later, the wunderkind has been shipped to Florida for a parcel of draft picks and cash, leaving the Raiders to promote from within out of necessity rather than choice. With the oldest team in the league facing a salary-cap implosion in 2003, the Raiders have just one season to capture the Lombardi Trophy. Because of that, the team turned to Bill Callahan, last year's offensive coordinator, for its last gasp effort.
