And on the seventh day, Jerry West rested. While the rest of us wrestled with superlatives while debating the Lakers, Celtics and Bulls. Shaq, Wilt, Bill and Kareem. Kobe and MJ. Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach. That's what happens when, on June 5, 2002, the Lakers defeated the New Jersey Nets in Game 1 of the NBA Finals and, seven days later on June 12, the Lakers defeated the Nets for the fourth consecutive time to win their third consecutive title.
