NFL coaching changes: Is Jon Gruden worth what the Bucs paid for him?

When the 2001 season ended with a playoff loss for the third consecutive year as a result of yet another offensive letdown, the Glazer family, owners of the Buccaneers, had had enough. The Glazers' bypassing of general manager Rich McKay in their decision making process turned the Bucs reputation from that of one of the better run and stable franchises in the league to a laughingstock as fast as Bill "The Tuna" Parcells' could change his mind on becoming the new head coach. With the team having three different offensive coordinators over the past three years, the Glazers wanted an offense-minded head coach who could right the ship. Yet they also needed a coach with more prestige than the departing Tony Dungy. With the Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells deals as precedents, the Glazers agreed to give the Oakland Raiders two first-round picks, two second-round picks and $8 million in cash for head coach Jon Gruden.
