Fantasy Future Rankings: Week 3
After an impressive start, temper expectations for Eddie Royal
Stop using past performance to evaluate fantasy players. Start using the future. Each week, numberFire will provide updated projections for future fantasy points through Week 17. To go with the numbers, Field Yates will provide analysis on what the numbers reveal. Fantasy players have a new resource to evaluate trades and roster moves: The Fantasy Future Rankings.
Lead the league in red zone targets? Check.
Lead the league in touchdowns? Check.
So what's a Chargers wide receiver have to do to get a little respect around here?
Before Eddie Royal owners (and before a near 68 percent jump this week, he was owned in only approximately 7.2 percent of ESPN leagues) flip their desks in frustration over the fact that Royal remains 54th among wide receivers in numberFire's TPS (total player score) projections following Week 2, take a step back and examine both what he's done and what to expect going forward. Remember that TPS is a player's value relative to other players, incorporating such factors as positional scarcity and how much a player contributes over the average player at the position. More importantly, it deals with what's expected in the weeks ahead, rather than weeks past.
The good news? Royal followed up his first ever multi-touchdown game in the season opener with three more scores in Week 2, catapulting him onto everyone's fantasy radar and making him among the most-added waiver wire pickups this week.
Those who were enticed enough by his Week 1 performance to put in a claim and start Royal in Week 2 were royally (no pun intended) rewarded with a 27-point outburst at the hands of the lowly Eagles secondary. That outing was good enough to thrust Royal ahead of DeSean Jackson (who also dazzled in the Philly-San Diego game) as the top scorer among wide receivers thus far.
But that's only thus far.
