Engel's Mailbag: Early Season Exams
Engel: The wide receivers are the easier decision. While Jackson does tend to get banged up himself, he's a proven veteran and the top passing target for the 49ers. While he hasn't started quickly, he is a luxury as a reserve, and Jones is only a rookie. As for your running backs, Jacobs is the best option at running back, as he is not gone for the season and will prove he can start for many fantasy teams when he returns. I would list White second, as the Titans are pushing him hard to become a viable starter and he has good potential as a goal-line runner. Chris Brown will share some carries with him and I rank him third in your listing, as he will occasionally have some quality outings. How Ward and Wynn fit in when Jacobs and Vernand Morency return remains to be seen. Ward is more versatile and elusive than Wynn, should be next to last on your list. He's a stopgap option for the desperate Packers right now, even though he has some minor appeal as a goal-line back over the long term. Jackson has faded from prominence quickly in Green Bay and don't hesitate to cut him.
Jason Link, Charles Town, W. Va.: I am in a 12-team league with a $200 auction draft cap and franchise players. Our players carry a three-year max tag on them. I have Larry Johnson, who is in his final year and will go back in the pool. I have offered Larry Johnson and Chris Chambers for Joseph Addai (who I can franchise next year for $23) plus his weakest wide receiver. My team consists of Brady, Johnson, Edgerrin James, Travis Henry, Torry Holt, and Joey Galloway.
