Murphy's Law says anything that can go wrong, will. Now, I'd venture that ol' Murph didn't know a thing about bump-and-run technique or the zone blitz, but I think he was on to something.

When it comes to defense/special teams units, we know that year-to-year value can be unpredictable and that drafting a unit too high just isn't prudent strategy -- like opening a soda bottle with your teeth or listening to Wayne Newton albums backwards. You just never know what might happen.

But the work doesn't end on draft day. Because the variables are greater and more influential for a D/ST unit than offenses and individual skill players, the position requires constant attention and regular maintenance. Example: A well-regarded Bills D/ST gave its owners a 19-point gift coming out of the box last year, then promptly imploded as LB Takeo Spikes went down and the offense schlepped through the rest of the season.
