My usual starting quarterback, Jay Cutler, is on a bye this week and I need a replacement for him. My options to pick up from free agency are Marc Bulger, Derek Anderson or Jeff Garcia. I am leaning towards Garcia with the Cowboys missing three defensive backs, but I'm concerned that Garcia is the least talented of the bunch. Who would you pick up to fill in for Cutler?
S. Epstein

Dave: I'm with you on this one, so I'd grab Garcia. This week's matchup versus the Cowboys is too good to pass up with Adam Jones now in rehab, Roy L. Williams on injured reserve for the year with a fractured arm and Terence Newman fighting abdominal and groin injuries. Garcia has an incredible schedule down the stretch facing the Chiefs, Vikings, Lions and Saints through Week 13 and would make for an excellent backup quarterback for the rest of the season, as well. As far as Garcia not being talented enough, I'm not buying that at all, especially since he's coming off a Pro Bowl year in 2007. His completion percentage (69 percent) is as high as it has ever been, and in last week's game, Garcia threw for 310 yards and a touchdown against the struggling Seahawks. The only real worry that I have with Garcia at this point is his recent injury history since he has missed three games this year already. However, he does seem to be in fine health now and is well worth the midseason investment.

I need some help in deciding which wide receiver I should pick up in my 12-team point-per-reception league with deep benches. There aren't many wide receivers out there that I would consider good choices to be rostered. I'm desperate because of injuries and bye weeks over the next few games. Could you please guide me in the right direction? I'm more concerned with long-term pickups over an immediate quick fix. Here are the choices available to me: Hank Baskett, Domenik Hixon, Greg Camarillo, Malcolm Floyd and Donnie Avery. Which direction do I go here?
J. Brady

Dave: That's an ugly group of wide receivers you've got to choose from there. Immediately I'm going to eliminate Baskett from consideration because of his inconsistencies and the fact that Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis are back in action with the Eagles this week. Hixon isn't really a long-term option unless injury strikes. Floyd has been very productive to date with Chris Chambers missing time, but Chambers could be back as soon as this weekend. I like Avery and think he'll give owners decent production, but the option that really sticks out to me is Camarillo. What I like about Camarillo most is his consistency and that he's the clear No. 1 target for Chad Pennington right now. Camarillo is involved quite frequently from week to week in the Dolphins' offense, which points to the effectiveness of Camarillo's long-term ability as a receiver for your squad. He's currently averaging 4.5 receptions and 56 yards a game. Camarillo isn't worth getting too excited about, but if you're looking for a solid, steady, producing wide receiver over the remainder of the season, Camarillo is your man.

I have won five in a row and now stand at 5-2 and at the top of my division. I want to keep things going in the right direction so I wanted to have you look at my roster to see where I can improve. Right now, my roster includes: Tony Romo, Trent Edwards, Clinton Portis, Joseph Addai, Jamal Lewis, Mewelde Moore, Jamaal Charles, Randy Moss, Jerricho Cotchery, Kevin Walter, Roddy White, Torry Holt and Chad Johnson. I was thinking about offering Cotchery for either Willis McGahee or Maurice Jones-Drew. I also thought about throwing out Holt's name to see what I could get for him in a deal. I'll be dropping Charles for sure, and maybe Moore, since Parker should be back soon. What's your advice for me?
Irvin Harmon

Dave: Overall you're in pretty good shape with this club, especially when you get Romo and Addai back in action. Don't make any rash moves with this team, because I want you to keep the core together. You've got a great shot of getting yourself to the playoffs as long as you don't tweak things too much. However, I would like to see you get one more producing running back, so good idea on your part. Addai is still fighting injury, although he's due back soon, and Portis has been a little banged up of late as well. Plus, Moore will lose his starting role when Parker gets back into action, as you previously indicated. Offering Cotchery for McGahee or MJD would be a good deal for you and the overall makeup of your team, but with Cotchery's goose egg on Sunday it will be tough to sell him. You'll likely have to part with Roddy White to land either running back. If you offer up Holt to your leaguemates, he'll bring you much less, of course. Holt should net you RBs like Warrick Dunn, Justin Fargas or Jonathan Stewart.
